I've already told you some of what's coming in JobMob's near future, but that to-do list is too vague for us to measure properly. New video blogger for Brazen Careerist Bruce Tulgan I know, I know, I spent a whole post ranting about how almost everyone should not be video blogging. So its surprising to hear that Im launching Bruces video blog here, right? The reason I love Bruces video blog is that he is a great speaker, and he has great ideas, and he gets them out really fast, which is important because I dont have a lot of patience to watch video online. The first time I heard of Bruce was when he published the book, Managing Generation X. He was the first person to say, Hey, were not like the baby boomers. Were not going to be able to work with you if you dont start treating us differently. I was so excited to buy his book. So excited that someone had identified what I was feeling. Bruce still has a great sense about what is coming next in the work world, and his forthcoming book, Its Okay to Be the Boss, is about management. Specifically, how to be a competent manager in the new workplace. Bruces bottom line is that management isnt just a title, its an obligation you have to the people who report to you. He focuses on how to be a good manager when the most junior employee in the company has no problem asking for Thursdays off to go to karate class. He gives tips on what to do when you become the manager of your friend. And he shows everyone, even non-managers, how to tell your boss how to manage you more effectively. You know the lesson here: You have to treat everyone you meet with respect because you dont know who you are going to need later. The problem is that people use the lesson at work they treat their boss and their underlings well. But they dont treat people they dont work with well. This is such a ubiquitous problem that half of American workers have been psychologically abused at their workplace, according the Handbook on Workplace Violence, a government publication. But the abuse is coming from people outside the workspace, such as clients, customers or, as in Barrys case, third-party people you just have to deal with in order to get your work done. I believe you should be nice to everybody. As you rise, you will see the world gets so small. She describes, in fact, what happens to a guy like Bonds. When you are on top of the world, you stand on the part of the mountain that is very small. The number of people you really talk to at the top is small. Its more intense than at the bottom, where theres room for tons of people. Extremely talented people can get to the top while being a jerk, but that doesnt mean theyll be celebrated. After all, the baseball writers are also the Hall of Fame voters.

Who Do You Wish You Could Have Thanked Before It Was Too Late Part of Kathys series Finding Brave To Build a Better Life This week, I heard the very sad news that a lovely woman in my community passed away from cancer at the age 54. I didn’t know her well, but we had intersected in a number of ways several years ago. For one, she had coached my daughter in a favorite sport in high school, and she was always kind, generous, loving and supportive to my daughter and to the other girls. I’ve experienced this as a rare thing when it comes to competitive sports in affluent towns that are all about “winning.” It rocked me deep inside to hear of her loss, for a number of core reasons (including how her family would miss her so terribly and how tragic it is to lose a loved one so early in life.) But another reason that hit me hard was a deep sadness and regret I felt in my heart that I hadn’t thanked her enough for her kindness â€" the lost opportunity for me to share with her that, unbeknownst to her, she had made a lasting positive impression and impact on me and my daughter. Strangely, just one night later, I was channel surfing on TV and noticed the film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I realized that I’d never seen the move from beginning to end, and decided to watch. I was moved and I cried (as millions of others have over that movie). One key message from the film is that we can make an enormous difference in the lives of others, and in our community and the world, without ever truly realizing it. It got me wondering this: Who would I like to thank right this minute for the impact they’ve had on me that Ive failed to acknowledge? Who made a real difference in my life (in small or big ways) and doesnt even know it? And who would I feel a deep pang of sadness and regret if I hear they have left this life and I never expressed my thanks and appreciation. This holiday season, let’s all take a 21-day “I Deeply Appreciate You” challenge of thanking 21 people (or more) in our lives who’ve made an impact, a difference, or opened a door for us or offered a helping hand that changed our lives for the better. Let’s reach out in any way that calls to us â€" an email, a handwritten note, a small gift or token of our appreciation, a phone call, to share our heartfelt appreciation for their kindness, generosity, love, and support. Then, let’s spend a few minutes every day for these 21 days thinking (and journaling) about what it feels like and how it impacts us directly, to thank others for what they’ve done and been that helped us. I, for one, simply can’t live one more minute focused on the news, the horrible headlines, the divisiveness in our country and world, the hate and negativity thats seeping into our daily existence. I’m done with immersing myself in that darkness and rage. I want some new light to surround me now, and I’m going to do something to help generate that light â€" and that something is giving thanks for all that is beautiful, loving, and life-affirming around me.
